NHL All-Star Game — What Makes It Special?
The NHL All-Star Game is not a league but an annual exhibition event traditionally held during the National Hockey League (NHL) regular season. The format of the NHL All-Star Game has changed over time. From 1947 to 1968, the All-Star Game was primarily played between the previous season's Stanley Cup champions and a team of All-Stars from other clubs. Starting in 1969, the format was geographic, featuring All-Stars from the Eastern and Western Conferences. In 2016, the format was significantly changed and now features four All-Star teams representing the league's four divisions, competing in a single-elimination tournament with all teams playing 3 games. All games in the tournament are played in a three-on-three format, with each half lasting 10 minutes. A shootout is played to determine the winner if the score is tied after 20 minutes.
